Welcome to VYRAL!

We are a newly established nonprofit organization as of September 2023, with a mission to advance surgical research. The initiative was originally launched by Patrick Kirchweger in December 2022, bringing together ambitious young doctors from the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Ordensklinikum Linz. By now, VYRAL has become the largest surgical study group in Upper Austria.

Our primary focus is on surgical oncological research, particularly in the treatment of various tumor diseases such as pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, thyroid cancer, and more. Promoting and developing surgical research, especially in the field of cancer treatment, with Linz as a major center in Austria, is of great importance to us.

Our goal was to strengthen Linz and Upper Austria as a hub for research and to provide science and education free of charge and in high quality for the benefit of patients and their future healthcare providers.

Our collaborators represent VYRAL at numerous national and international oncological/surgical congresses. We made our official debut at the Austrian Congress of Surgery 2023, where we had 13 posters and presentations, making us the organization with the most scientific contributions at the biggest surgical congress in Austria.

Furthermore, to support aspiring medical professionals, we offer practical courses several times a year, including teaching of surgical suturing and knot tying (for medical interns and students), surgery for general practitioner training (for medical interns training to become general practitioners), and other education programs for future medical professionals.
